Lake Bonavista – History of Keith Built Construction and Calgary City Permits

So a friend of mine started a new site this week, and he did his first post. I was impressed with the quality of the posts because of the detail, use of Google maps, Youtube, and the good information it had. Also, the post wasn’t just a little spurt of information.

The new site they are working is called RealtorsInCalgary.biz and their first post is all about a suburb in Calgary Southeast. This fits in here at BDBUD because we live in the same neighbourhood. What they are doing is featuring the different neighbourhoods in Calgary, and it looks like it’s going ot be on going well into the future. I’ve even seen that realtor’s name on the odd bus stop bench around the neighbourhood. The first post they did is featuring the Lake Bonavista community and it’s a fairly good read – the video promotional from the restaurant sort of shows off the lake, and the music gives you the “vibe”. It’s a quiet area, and fairly well off. It’s an R1 rated neighbourhood as well, so no condos or apartments (I know – these neighbourhood rating systems are coming under allot of fire these days.)

One thing that was good to see in the post was the bit about the handy location of Lake Bonavista – the easy access to the downtown area of Calgary via Southland and Blackfoot.

If you ever find yourself looking for a house in Calgary, don’t know much about the different neighbourhoods, and have over $500,000 to spend, I would check it out for sure. Tall, mature trees and an AMAZING private lake – biggest man made lake in Alberta and Canada they claim. Two big beaches, free boats to use, and Island, jumping docks, fishing (fed lake), skating on the lake in the winter, hockey areas kept clean in the winter, and a skating rink with a bonfire in the center close to entrance near the Promenade. Also, tennis courts, big grassy areas, a water fall (used for filtering the lake’s water supply).

The history is interesting too. You can the “official record” from Wikipedia here, but they don’t mention what “really happened there”. Here is an interesting quote from Wiki;

Lake Bonavista was developed by the Keith Construction company starting in 1967. It was the first community in Canada to be built around a man made lake, and served as a prototype for other “Lake Communities” in Calgary.

The rumor I heard was a little scandal-ridden. The story goes that Keith Built homes had permit issues with the city of Calgary, and they ended up just going ahead digging the massive hole for the man-made lake and taking all that earth and piling it up to make the water fall and hill. The rumor then in 1967 was the Keith never did get a permit from the city, and went ahead and started excavating anyway! By the time the city got wind of it, it was too done, and they were forced to “let it go”.

Never heard if Keith was fined for doing it, and still need the real story in case this is all just bunk. Great story to tell when you are hanging out down a the lake with the kids (and grand-kids). UPDATE: this story is not bunk. I asked a few older folks who remember the story behind the building of Lake Bonavista, and they confirmed this to be true. Mr. E.V. Keith never did have a permit before he starting digging the hole for the lake. This article says the same thing too.

If you know the real story and have a link to something on it, please leave a comment. Keith Construction of the 1960 was founded by Ellis Vee Keith (friends called him Vee), but do think I could find an old picture of him, or find some information about him……nope.

Day Park Swimming and Camping in Coeur D Alene

Found an amazing spot for day camping in Coeur D Alene (CDA) and here some information, a video, and silly still picture of it here. This is located across the road from the Blackwell Island Park RV park and Cedar’s Floating Restaurant access road in CDA. It’s perfect for all ages and groups of people. Here is a list of what you get for a small $5 fee to the parks (paid via honor system).

You can’t stay in the park overnight because they close the gate to the public late at night and open it early in the morning. It’s really a boat launching area first (biggest and nicest lake boat launch I have ever seen), and day camping swimming area second. The boaters are quiet and no bother at all. Dogs are allowed to be there and I rarely see them in leashes, so free for all.

Never really that busy except for weekends days that are really hot. This spot is perfect for cooking, hanging, out, swimming, swimming your dog. If you have an RV is ideal because you can drive your unit right up beside the camping site.

All this for $5 Bucks!!!

  • concrete clean pad
  • no mud or dirt (grass and concrete only)
  • high quality picnic table
  • high quality BBQ fire-pit on a stand for cooking
  • clean water swimming (in-flow to lake)
  • calm water (ALMOST NO CURRENT – VERY SAFE)
  • deep swimming depth for adults
  • shallow swimming area for children
  • tree/rope swing into water
  • no bugs – mosquitoes, horse flies, yellow jackets or wasps
  • extreme swimming privacy from drivers (boat launchers)

McPhails On Tour – From Australia to North America and Who Knows Where Next

So my wife and I met a nice family from Australia today in our RV park in Palm Springs, called Emerald Springs RV Park. Betty hung out allot with their youngest boy, who was really cute. Love hearing the word “caravan” with an Aussie accent. Always loved the “down under accent”. Probably why I like Paul Hogan so much.

Anyway. So the McPhails have a Blogspot blog started so they can document their tour of Southern California, and it’s called McPhails On Tour. Couple of posts started there, and I will be heading over there to make a comment and wish them well on their amazing adventures.

They’re going to see Hollywood and eventually end up in Disneyland, which will surely blow their minds, as it blows the minds of anyone with a eyes, ears, and a heartbeat.

Gotta run…..have fun.

Disney World Vacation in Kissimmee Orlando, FL. U.S.A. With Discounted Air Travel

Disney World in Orlando, Florida is amazing!

Kissimmee is the area we like to stay when we visit “Wally World”. I find it to be the best location.

Our next trip we will stay at the Lighthouse Key Resort & Spa Condos in Kissimmee. It looks like a great place to relax after a busy day at one of the many area attractions.

Click the link to see the local Kissimmee ,Orlando map. The location is a huge plus as well.

At the Lighthouse Key Resort you have a choice to rent a 1-4 bedroom condo – all with kitchens. From Apr. 9th- Apr.23rd, 2011 the price ranges from $149.-$259.

The price depends on the time of year and size of condo you need. The dates above are during Easter Holidays. You would get a better rate if you traveled in the low season.

I found a really good price on my flights departing from Calgary to Orlando FL with  Continental Air lines on Apr.9th/2011 on flight #636 Calgary to Houston, and flight #1586 from Houston-Orlando FL

Returning on Apr. 23rd Orlando Fl.- Calgary, AB  with American Airlines on flight #1273 Orlando, FL.- Dallas, Ft Worth, then flight #2081 from Dallas, Ft Worth to Calgary, AB.

The base fare is $373. plus taxes $132.70 for a total of $505.70 C.A.D. per person. This price is about as good as it gets – I shopped around for a couple of weeks to find a seat sale that was worthy to share with all of our readers.

On our first trip to Disney World we were there for 1 week. We bought 5 day hopper passes that never expire (lifetime). We only ended up using 3 days, as the kids wanted to spent some time at the condo swimming for the day. They love all the Disney Parks, but they were so exhausted at the end of the day. The passes never went to waste as we did return at later date.

I highly recommend taking your Family to WALT DISNEY WORLD. It is a trip of a live time!

Shanghai, China Vacation Package – Return Flight With Hotel

I found a really good seat sale on Air I found a really good seat sale on AirCanada from Calgary-Vancouver-Shanghai return on May 6Th-May 27Th.

This time of year the trees should be in bloom and the weather will be warm but not to hot. Perfect for touring around Shanghai, China.

It is truly  an amazing place. I can not wait to visit there again! The high light of my first trip was Yu Yuan Old Town (Old Chinese City) in the Nanshi District. City lights, and the Shopping was like a shopping spree.

The base fare is $723.98 plus taxes & fees $453.64 came to $1177.62 return.

This will be our second trip to Shanghai so location was my first priority when I was choosing the hotel for our stay.

The hotel I choose is close to Yu Yuan Old Town and Yu Yuan Gardens, The Bund (photo above) and the shopping district.I think this location would be perfect for us. It is in the heart of Shanghai, central to everything we wanted.

I will be booking our accommodations at Sofitel Shanghai Hyland (505 Nanjing Road East, Huanhpu District.) The rate per night was $157. per night. You can find a hotel to meet any budget in Shanghai. My priority is a very clean room and the location.

I have picked one other hotel for the people who do not want to spend $157. per night.  It is the Oriental Bund Hotel (Xingyu Hotel) 386 Renmin Road, Huangpu District for $89. This hotel is very central as well.

Now if you want a hotel at a better price than that, I would book a room for maybe 3 nights at a nicer place and then find a hotel when you get there. I would ask to look at the room before I committed to taking it.

My first trip in Shanghai, we did not spend a lot of time in our room. We would be out touring around from morning to night.

Before you leave home write the name and address of your Hotel down in Chinese. When you arrive in Shanghai you can give it to your cab driver.

When we went I picked up a Shanghai Frommer’s book to read before we left and to carry with me every where we went. Sometimes we would just show our cab driver the name of where we would want to go from our book.

The hotel staff were very helpful with planning our days. They would write down our destinations each day in Chinese.

Huatulco Wedding, Reunion, or Family Vacation

I found this amazing place in Huatulco, Mexico. If you are planning a wedding, family reunion or a getaway with friends be sure to take a look at Las Palmas in Huatulco, Mexico.

If you rent the whole estate, it would sleep 36-50 people. They have 3 villas and 5 condos. You will find all the details on VRBO 117837.

I have been to Huatulco and know that this location would be good. You are walking distance to 2 beaches, shopping, and Santa Cruz.

I priced out my future trip for 36 Adults and 14 Kids. The weekly rate at high season is $18,750. It looks much better when you divide the cost by 36 Adults. It would be $520.83 plus tax, per Adult.

That is very reasonable to stay at a beautiful place like this for a week. There are extra services to add on if you want. If you are on a budget the low season rate for a week is only $12,750. plus tax.

If you are travelling from Canada, call Signature vacations for a group rate. (CDN 1.800.268.7063) I checked the airfare price for Mar. 8/2011 – Mar.15 2011. It was from Calgary – Huatulco return on Signature Vacations on flight WG 545, returning on flight 544. It came to $495. plus tax & fees $290, for a total of $785. return.

Before you set your date for your event, call the airline or charter company to get the best group rate for your trip. Make sure the vacation rental that you choose is on hold before you book flights. Good luck with your travel plans. If you pick this vacation rental, please come back to bdbud.com and tell us how your trip went.

Palm Springs Trip With Vacation Rental – Flying With Westjet

I planned this trip for 2 adults to Palm Springs California. on Dec 10th/10- Dec 17th/10.  on Westjet.

We would depart Calgary Dec. 10th on ws 1428 direct to PalmSprings California (PSP) and return Dec. 17th from Palm Springs on ws 1469 to Calgary, AB.

I found a seat sale for our return air travel. The airfare per person is $317.49 plus tax  119.64, for a total of $437.39. x2 is $874.78.

I am very happy with this rate, plus I will use my travel points to pay for the flights.

I have traveled to Palm Springs many times. I love the La Quinta area.  I found a vacation rental at Legacy Villas in La Quinta, see vacation rental here.

It would be my Husband and I traveling, so the 1 bedroom  would be perfect for us. The cost for the 1 bedroom villas would be $1095 USD plus tax, flights for 2 adults is $874.78.CAD.

The total for the trip is approximately $1969.78. We always rent a car at the airport (make reservations before you go).

The drive from the airport to Legacy Villas would be 30 to 40 minutes depending on the traffic. This is a great location, lots of golf courses near by, shopping, and great restaurants.

Road and Highway Conditions in Canada – Winter/December

Road and highway conditions in Canada this time of year (for December) are always a concern for Betty and I. We’re always on the road at sometime between Saskatoon and Calgary during the winter months – we have to be very careful when we’re driving on the snow and ice of course, and we are always checking out the alert web sites for the condition of all the different highways between SK, BC, and Alberta.

When I use the web to find all the different highway conditions, and the general weather in the area, then we make strategic route plan that keep us as safe as possible, away from the snow and ice, and away from the busier traffic highways. I will lay out our considerations when traveling during the Holiday Season’s below. We’ve heard of too many deaths and accidents out on our Canadian highways, like the infamous Trans Canada Highway #1.

My parents live in British Columbia on Vancouver Island again, and they used to live in the interior of B.C., so I’ve had to drive out West in the winter-time as well. Also, I had to commute on Highway #2 between Edmonton and Calgary for awhile during the winter as well. Allot of that driving was at night in snow and on ice. Had to commute the highways and roads between Saskatoon and Calgary for a year which of course included driving during the winter between Oyen, Hanna, Kindersely, Saskatoon, Delisle, Strathmore, and of course Calgary (home).

So our favorite route between Calgary and Saskatoon is as follows – keep in mind that we live in the Southern End of Calgary, so if you are driving to Saskatchewan from the North of Calgary it will be different – I’ll point out our favorite route from there as well. Both of these winter routes DO NOT have you driving on Trans Canada Hwy #1 for more than 10 minutes.

Winter Driving Route From Calgary South to Saskatoon Via Strathmore

So go to Google Maps on a new browser tab, and you can follow along with me here. We’ll start the journey down the Deerfoot which is Highway #2;

  • Go South in Highway #2 (Deerfoot)
  • Take the Highway 22x exit going East
  • Take a left on Hwy 24 going North
  • Take a right on Hwy 1 (Trans Canada)
  • Go through Strathmore (stop at Tim Hortons for coffee) and soon after that turn left going North on Hwy 21
  • Keep going North on Hwy 21 and take a right on to Hwy 9 going East towards Hanna (you’ll see signs for Three Hills)
  • Stay on Hwy 9 going East through Hanna (stop at A&W for a burger, fries, and maybe fuel). Keep going East on Hwy 9 through Youngstown, and Oyen, and then Alsask. When you get to Alsask you are at the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta, hence the name AL – SASK….get it?
  • When you cross the Sk/Ab border you stay on the same road/hwy which turns into the Sk Hwy #7 – keep going East
  • Stay on Hwy #7 Sk going through Kindersely, Rosetown, Zealandia, Harris, Laura, Delisle, Vanscoy, and next stop is Saskatoon

If you drive the speed limit (which I REALLY hope you do in the winter – PLEASE LIVE) at 100 Km an hour, you will get from Calgary to Saskatoon in 6 1/2 hours. This is my favorite stretch of highway in the world right now. Open skies, open fields, friendly people, expensive gas – you know….God’s country. I’ve driven this route in all kinds of driving conditions. We’ve been “storm-stayed” in Oyen at one time, and I’ve had to drive this route in the middle of night commuting in the ice, driving snow. Sometimes there is so much snow that it you are in “white-out” driving conditions.

The highway is pure white and your tires are on ONLY snow and ice, with no tire rubber on concrete or tarmack. Then the wind might be blowing hard in blizzard conditions so you can barely see any sign of the road, or oncoming traffic. In these conditions I suggest GETTING OFF THE ROAD and checking into a Hotel for awhile. This is how people die on Christmas. Hate to be so dark, but maybe this post will save a life.

Winter Driving Route From Calgary North to Saskatoon Via Beiseker

We’ll start this route going North on the Deerfoot which is Highway #2 going North of the Airport near Mcknight Blvd;

  • Keep going North on the Deerfoot (Hwy 2) through Balzac and Airdrie
  • Go right on Hwy 72 going East (just past Airdrie a little ways)
  • Go through Beiseker still going East and at Beisker the road changes from Hwy 72 to Hwy 9 – keep going
  • Go left on Hwy 21 going North

That’s it. Now for some tips for winter driving in really cold weather. We’re talking minus 25 degrees C and such.

What to Have in the Vehicle that Can Save Your Life

  • a fully charged cell phone with good coverage in Western Canada. If you are a Canadian then Rogers, Bell, or Telus will do. If you are from another Country or Continent, such as Europe, or the United States, make sure you have a cell phone that roams on Canadian cell phone networks (Bell, Rogers, or Telus)
  • make sure you have some warm and cosy blankets with you
  • make sure you have some warm winter parkas, gloves, toques, etc.
  • make sure you have some good dry matches and some candles in your glove box or console. We always do this when driving in the Canadian winters because you can light a candle and generate heat.
  • a working Visa Card, Mastercard, or American Express card for a hotel if you hit total “white-out” conditions.
  • COMMON SENSE. Don’t even think about driving the highways and roads in Canada after having a few drinks. Don’t drive the winter highways and road in Canada at night during the Holiday Seasons – that is when some people get really stupid and drive drunk. Stick to day time driving and just get a hotel or motel for the nights.

The most important factor when driving the highways and roads of Canada in the winter months is preparation. Use our safety list above, which is cheap and easy to do. Don’t drive at night, and make sure you check out the road condition advisory web sites BEFORE you hit road.

Never be in a rush or a panic to get somewhere. Never get “GET-HOME-ITUS” – it’s a disease that can kill you. We never HAVE to be somewhere. All we have to be is aware.

All our love to you today,

Betty and Brent

P.S. – the photo below is Copyright of Van Island Guy Blog this photo of his is a typical winter day on a Canadian Highway. There can be allot more snow than this, and allot colder. Bundle up baby!

Canada Travel

Our fourth travel category is our Country of origin, and where we were born and raised. We live in Canada still, and we will of course be writing about travelling through Canadian Provinces.
